Under the Bangladeshi 1943 Vagrancy Act women and children, forced to work on the streets by poverty, are rounded up and detained in reception centres and institutions without any legal representation at hearings or access to a solicitor during their detention. The Act itself does not comply with international human rights standards. Inside the home, many women are physically abused and raped; children are sexually abused.
