Mayurbhanj is the poorest district of Orissa, one of the most disadvantaged states of India. 58% of the district population is made up of scheduled tribes, most of whom live in remote regions. 49% of the population live below the poverty line. Female literacy rates are 38% and infant mortality is high (42/1000). Malaria is endemic with 47% of the population affected. Other communicable diseases include tuberculosis and leprosy. Health facilities are limited, understaffed and hard to reach.
