Cued Speech is a simple sound-based system comprising eight handshapes, used in four positions near the mouth, in conjunction with the lip patterns of normal speech so as to make all the sounds of spoken language fully comprehensible to deaf children and adults. It not only provides a readily learnt means of communication but also assists in the education of profoundly deaf children since the user learns the same grammar and construction as a hearing person.
