In El Salvador nearly all rivers and lakes are polluted. As a result only a quarter of the rural population has safe drinking water. In the areas most affected by the civil war communities were destroyed and the people displaced to steep unproductive land. Here no communities have a safe water supply which leads to high levels of infant deaths. The settlements are vulnerable to mud slides in rainy season. The soil is too poor for families to grow enough food to meet their needs.
