Overview

The Community Wealth Fund will give £175 million to communities living in disadvantaged areas across England.

This funding aims to:

  • make local services and facilities better in communities that are struggling and do not have many resources

  • help local people decide what's best for their area and work together to make change

  • reduce inequality and bring communities closer together

To do this, we're looking for organisations who will support local people to decide how to spend the money and make change in their area.

Examples of how to do this could include:

  • engaging with local people to understand their needs

  • helping set up working groups of local decision makers who can act on behalf of the community

  • providing training, support and guidance to local people on how to manage and deliver projects that benefit the area

  • bringing together community groups and helping them to work together

You need to be well connected to the area. And understand its people and their needs.

How much money each area will get

Each area will receive £2.55 million to be spent over 10 years.

  • £1.5 million will go to the community to spend

  • £1.05 million will go to the representing organisation to support the community and cover operational costs

Where the money comes from

The Community Wealth Fund was developed by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund and the Ministry for Housing, Community and Local Government.

It's one of the causes funded through the Dormant Assets Scheme, which aims to reunite people with lost or forgotten financial assets, such as old bank accounts. Where this is not possible, the funds are redirected to support social and environmental causes.

The National Lottery Community Fund is the delivery partner for the Community Wealth Fund, taking responsibility for the detailed design and management of the fund.

Of the £175 million:

  • £87.5 million comes from the Dormant Assets Scheme

  • £87.5 million is match funding from the National Lottery Community Fund
