Managing your project bilingually

If you receive funding from The National Lottery Community Fund for a project in Wales, you must offer your project’s services in both languages. This is in line with our Welsh Language Standards and is a term and condition of funding. It's also a fantastic opportunity to make sure that your project is accessible to everyone in your community.

What this means

It’s important that you think of how you’re going to deliver your project bilingually before you submit your funding application. This is because you’ll need to include any associated costs within your project budget.

It’s worth considering that:

  • if you plan to create written materials as part of your project, they’ll need to be available in both languages where possible (such as leaflets, posters, booklets and websites)
  • if you intend to employ a member of staff or bring in short-term workers with your funding, you need to know if you need a Welsh speaker to fulfil those duties
  • adverts for a new post or sessional staff will need to be placed in the media and online bilingually, and the recruitment process, such as interviews, must be available in either language
  • any films produced with our funding will need to be bilingual where possible, or as separate Welsh and English films
  • projects promoted on social media will need to be bilingual whenever possible
  • you think about the linguistic nature of the community you work within during the life of the grant, and to offer any service accordingly

What you need to do

You need to carefully consider your project costs of working bilingually so they can be included within the project budget. These may include:

  • translating publicity and promotional materials
  • translating websites or bilingual web design companies
  • translating job advertisements
  • costs of advertising jobs in the media in both Welsh and English

Create a bilingual project guide

It’s a good idea to complete a bilingual project guide, which sets out how you intend to carry out your project bilingually. This will help us when assessing your application. It’s also a useful document for those managing the project, and for your service users to see which services you have available in Welsh.
