The National Lottery Community Fund goes green!

In June, we’re celebrating World Environment Day (5 June) and Great Big Green Week (7 – 15 June). We fund environmental projects of all shapes and sizes that benefit people and planet and want to encourage even more people to get involved. Find out more about our funding and how to apply below.

Why is environmental action so important?

Environmental action benefits people as well as the planet. On World Environment Day, we published new research* showing that it can improve people’s mental health, helping them to lead healthier, happier lives. Not only that, but over a third (43%) of UK parents felt spending time in nature would help their child’s mental health and over a quarter said access to green space would benefit them.

Since we funded the first ever Great Big Green Week in 2021, it has grown into the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature. From community gardens, to repair and recycle schemes, to running volunteer sessions to care for green spaces, thanks to National Lottery players, people across the UK from Perth to Portsmouth are making a difference.

We’ll be celebrating some of the people behind these incredible projects across our social media channels throughout June, so if you’re a National Lottery funded project committed to helping the environment, make sure you join in and tag us so we can celebrate with you:
