Introduction

This paper summarises key achievements and learning from the Talent Match youth employment programme, which supported vulnerable young people aged 18 to 24 facing barriers to finding work.

The programme was unique in that it was initiated by, and designed with, young people. The report shares learning for funders, delivery partners and organisations supporting young people on their journey to employment.

Findings

The research found that the programme was successful in helping vulnerable young people into and closer to employment. In the first 3 years, it supported over 22,000 unemployed young people.

Talent Match adopted a youth-centred approach. This meant placing the wishes and aspirations of young people first, before those of the services that are there to support them.

The research also found that:

  • it’s important to consider integrating mental health support with employment support

  • young people valued 1-to-1 support from trusted staff

  • flexible support helped people progress at their own pace

  • partnerships between organisations improved access to support

  • involving young people in programme design strengthened delivery

  • in-work support can improve sustainability of employment outcomes

  • voluntary and community organisations can successfully lead strategic youth employment partnerships
