Introduction

This research explores how people across the country are feeling about their communities, and it tells us what their ambitions are for where they live.

The findings are intended to inform policymakers, funders and organisations working to strengthen communities.

Findings

The research found that many people value strong communities and local support networks. However, many also experience barriers such as:

  • poverty

  • inequality

  • limited local resources

The research found that:

  • young people are more likely to feel part of their community than those over 35

  • food banks, supporting older people, and supporting young people were the most popular areas for volunteering

  • support with the rising cost of living is a key priority

  • the cost-of-living crisis has exacerbated loneliness

  • when asked about their local physical environment, people prioritise safety on the streets

These findings are intended to inform policymakers, funders and other organisations working to strengthen communities.
