Our full missions framework
We use a missions framework to guide the projects we fund. Each mission has a set of outcomes we want to see in communities.
Some outcomes relate to more than one mission. This means your project may contribute to more than one mission at the same time – even if you only focus on a few outcomes.
For example:
- if your project helps young people form strong community connections, it contributes to both the 'Children and young people thrive' mission and the 'Communities come together' mission
- if your work improves access to local green spaces, it supports the 'Environmentally sustainable communities' mission – and also contributes to 'Healthier communities' and 'Communities come together'
Mission 1: Communities come together
For everyone, focused most on those experiencing poverty, disadvantage and discrimination – and the intersection of these. This mission's outcomes are:
- communities have inclusive places and activities (physical and virtual), that bring people from all backgrounds together
- people are empowered and make a positive difference to their communities
- people feel a sense of safety, belonging and trust in other people in their local area
- people have positive relationships and connections
Some of these outcomes are relevant to other missions too:
- all four outcomes also contribute to 'Children and young people thrive'
- the first and fourth outcomes also contribute to 'Communities are healthier'
Mission 2: Communities help children and young people thrive
For infants, children, young people and their families, focused most on those experiencing poverty, disadvantage and discrimination - and the intersection of these. This mission's outcomes are:
- babies and children from all backgrounds (and their families) have the community support they need to have a good start in life
- children and young people have positive social and emotional skills development
- children and young people have trusted adults in their community for support and advice
- communities support young people to fulfil their potential and thrive into adulthood
Some of these outcomes are relevant to other missions too:
- the first two outcomes also contribute to 'Communities are healthier'
- the third outcome also contributes to 'Communities come together'
Mission 3: Communities are healthier
For everyone, focused most on those experiencing poverty, disadvantage and discrimination - and the intersection of these. This mission's outcomes are:
- communities have inclusive places and activities (physical and virtual), that support health and wellbeing
- people are empowered and make a positive difference to services that support health and wellbeing in their communities
- people’s physical and mental health and wellbeing is supported by their communities
- communities contribute to reduced health inequalities
Some of these outcomes are relevant to other missions too:
- the third outcome also contributes to 'Communities come together' and 'Children and young people thrive'
Mission 4: Communities are environmentally sustainable
For everyone, focused most on those at risk of negative environmental impacts, and/or least engaged in environmental action. This mission's outcomes are:
- community organisations have a positive impact on the environment (in relation to nature, pollution and/or climate)
- people are empowered and make a positive difference to the environmental impact of their communities
- communities prepare for and adapt to changes in climate
- people have access to quality natural spaces in their communities, enabling regular connection to nature
Some of these outcomes are relevant to other missions too:
- the second outcome also contributes to 'Children and young people thrive' and 'Communities are healthier'
- the fourth outcome also contributes to 'Communities come together' and 'Communities are healthier'
