What you can spend the money on

What we can fund

We can fund things like:

  • equipment
  • training costs
  • volunteer expenses
  • professional support, such as using a consultant or freelancer expertise

Using a consultant or freelancer expert

A consultant or freelancer can bring new skills and experience to your organisation. We can fund this if it helps strengthen your organisation and prepare you for future challenges.

In your application, tell us if you plan to get professional support and what problem they will help you solve. You can also use part of your budget to carry out their suggestions.

When looking for a consultant, try to get 3 quotes for the work. We may ask to see evidence of this.

You cannot use our funding to pay a consultant or freelancer to write your application.

What we cannot fund

We cannot fund:

  • staff salaries
  • capital costs, such as buying land, buildings, vehicles or refurbishments
  • projects you have already been funded for (we can only fund new work or work that builds on an existing project)
  • projects that focus on reducing your energy costs
  • your organisation’s running costs
  • retrospective costs (things that have already happened, or you have already paid for)
  • alcohol
  • contingency costs, loans, endowments or interest
  • paying someone else to write your application
  • VAT you can reclaim
  • religious activities
  • statutory activities
  • overseas travel
  • projects outside the UK
  • activities that make profits for private gain
