Introduction
This report explores some of the achievements, challenges, opportunities and concerns of project funded under the Women and Girls Initiative (WGI). It focuses on the first 2 years of funding drawing on the learning and experience of projects. The programme supported women and girls facing multiple disadvantages. It aimed to improve their lives and influence wider systems. The report is for funders, policy makers, and voluntary organisations.
Findings
The research found that flexible, long-term funding helped organisations. It enabled them to respond to women and girls’ needs. Trusted relationships were central to effective support. Safe, women-only spaces helped participants build confidence and stability.
It also found that projects:
supported women facing multiple and complex challenges
helped improve confidence, wellbeing and social connections
strengthened local partnerships and referral networks
amplified women and girls’ voices in service design
The programme encouraged collaboration rather than competition. It also supported organisations led by and for specific communities. This included Black and minoritised women.
