Introduction
This research evaluates the UK Cost of the School Day programme. The programme works with schools to reduce the financial pressure of the school day on families. It aims to understand how schools can reduce costs and stigma linked to poverty. It’s intended for:
schools
funders
policymakers
Methodology
The research uses a mixed-methods evaluation. It used surveys, interviews and case studies with schools, staff members and families across the UK. The study reflects evidence gathered during the programme. This approach was used to assess changes in school practice, and the experiences of pupils and their families.
Findings
The research found that schools made practical changes to reduce costs for families. These changes helped lower financial pressure and reduce stigma for children affected by poverty.
The research found that:
schools reviewed uniform policies and reduced unnecessary costs
staff increased awareness of poverty and its impact on pupils
schools changed practices around trips, food and materials
pupils reported feeling less singled out because of money
families felt better supported by school staff
The programme also helped schools build confidence to talk openly about poverty. In some areas. It influenced wider school policy and culture.
Considerations
When using these findings, consider that much of the evidence is based on self-reported data from participating schools. The evidence reflects learning from programme delivery rather than long-term impact measurement. Results may not apply to schools operating in different policy or funding contexts.
