Introduction
This report explores the first stages of the Women and Girls Initiative from 2016-2019. The programme funded projects supporting women and girls facing disadvantage. It aimed to strengthen organisations and influence wider systems. The report is intended for funders, policy makers, and voluntary organisations.
Findings
The report found that long-term, flexible funding strengthened organisations and partnerships. It gave projects stability and space to plan. Trusted relationships were central to effective support. Safe, women-only spaces helped participants feel secure and valued.
The research found that projects:
supported women facing multiple disadvantages
improved confidence, wellbeing and social connections
strengthened collaboration across local services
increased the voice and influence of women and girls
The programme supported organisations led by and for specific communities. This included Black and minoritised women.
