Introduction

This research evaluates the impact and legacy of The Big Lunch events, encouraging neighbours to come together for shared meals and activities. The report explores how the programme strengthens community ties and supports local action. It’s intended for:

  • funders

  • community organisers

  • policymakers

Findings

The Big Lunch strengthens connections between neighbours and increases a sense of belonging. It also found evidence of longer-term community benefits.

The research found that:

  • people felt less lonely after taking part

  • neighbours built new relationships and strengthened existing ones

  • participants felt more pride in their local area

  • some people went on to volunteer or organise local activities

  • events encouraged inclusion across different ages and backgrounds

In some areas, The Big Lunch helped spark wider community action. It supported confidence and skills among local organisers. The programme contributed to stronger and more connected communities over time.
