Introduction

This report examines how football can strengthen social connection and belonging by bringing people from different backgrounds together. It understands football’s potential to reduce division and promote inclusive identity.

It’s intended for those working on cohesion and integration, such as:

  • policymakers

  • football clubs

  • community organisations

  • practitioners

Findings

The research found that football clubs have a unique ability to connect and unite people across social, ethnic and political divides. Shared pride in a team helped reduce stereotypes, build trust and create moments of meaningful social contact. Many clubs already play important civic roles by offering community spaces and inclusive programmes. Evidence from pilot campaigns showed that inclusive messages and place‑based identity can strengthen a sense of belonging among diverse groups.

However, the report also identified barriers, including perceptions that clubs mainly serve traditional fans, and a need for more proactive outreach. Opportunities remain for clubs to deepen social connection by welcoming new audiences and investing in community‑focused initiatives.
