Revisiting Place in Youth Social Action

Introduction

This research explores place-based approaches to youth social action through the #iwill Fund. It examines how local areas build partnerships and support young people to take part in social action. The research aims to inform funders, local leaders, and organisations running activities.

Findings

The report highlights that place-based youth social action can help young people participate in activities that respond to local needs and priorities. Strong collaboration between funders, local organisations and communities can support more effective place-based working.

The research found that:

• listening to local communities and young people improves understanding of local needs

• local skills and expertise strengthen programme design and delivery

• empowering local actors can make activities more responsive to place-specific issues

• convening local organisations encourages collaboration and shared learning

• young people are more likely to stay involved in social action when activities are connected to their local area

It also found that systems change takes time and that short funding cycles can limit progress and stability.
