Introduction

This research explores how place-based funding can promote inclusion and tackle discrimination at community level. The aim is to understand what helps reduce inequality and strengthen community relationships. It’s intended for:

  • funders

  • policymakers

  • voluntary and community organisations

Findings

The research found that place-based action can help tackle discrimination when it builds trust and long-term relationships. It also found that change takes time and requires strong local partnerships.

The research found that:

  • long-term funding helps communities address deep-rooted inequalities

  • successful initiatives involve inclusive participation, open dialogue about discrimination, and sustained, long-term engagement

  • trusted local organisations are key to engaging marginalised groups

  • co-production strengthens relevance and community ownership

  • safe community spaces support dialogue and reduce tensions

  • systems change requires collaboration across services and sectors

Projects were most effective when they worked with people who experienced discrimination and shared decision-making power.
