Introduction
This research explores place-based funding in the Big Local programme. It examines how giving long-term funding directly to residents can help communities build:
skills
confidence
local leadership and change
The research aims to inform policymakers, funders and organisations interested in community-led development and neighbourhood regeneration.
Findings
The research found that long-term place-based funding can help communities build skills and stronger local networks. The Big Local model gives residents time, funding and flexibility to decide local priorities and develop solutions for their area.
The research found that:
place-based funding can build community capacity through local leadership, networks and organisations
community hubs and shared spaces can strengthen local connections and support economic activity
long-term and flexible funding gives communities time to learn, build confidence and respond to local challenges
early support and guidance are often needed to help communities manage funding and decision-making
local context and starting capacity strongly influence how much change communities can achieve
The findings also show that community-led programmes can strengthen local networks and participation. However, wider economic change is harder to achieve through local funding alone.
