Introduction

This report summarises findings from Phase 5 of the Life Skills programme, which supported young people to build confidence, independence and practical skills for adulthood. It reviews how projects were delivered, who took part, and what was achieved.

The report is aimed at funders, practitioners and organisations working with young people who need extra support.

Findings

The report found that Life Skills projects helped young people improve confidence, motivation and emotional wellbeing. Participants developed a range of practical skills, such as:

  • communication

  • teamwork

  • budgeting

  • managing daily tasks

  • forming supportive relationships with staff

  • forming support relationships with peers

Many young people reported feeling more prepared for education, training or employment.

Projects that offered consistent support, youth centred activities and opportunities for progression saw the greatest impact.

Some young people with higher levels of need required more intensive or sustained support.

The report highlights the importance of flexible delivery and trusted relationships in helping young people overcome barriers.
