Introduction
This report looks at how youth social action can be supported so that more young people are able to take part. It brings together learning from the #iwill Fund Learning Hub on what helps widen participation and keep young people involved. It’s for funders, delivery organisations, policymakers and others who design, fund or support youth social action.
Findings
The report found that young people’s involvement in youth social action is strongly shaped by social and economic factors. These include access to resources, support and encouragement. Young people from less affluent backgrounds are less likely to take part regularly or over time.
The report found that:
starting at a younger age helps youth social action become a long-term habit
high-quality opportunities and visible role models support continued involvement
costs, time pressures and caring responsibilities can limit participation
trusted local partners help reach young people less likely to engage
youth social action is more sustainable when it aligns with organisations’ focus and wider goals
