Introduction

This research explores the health and social outcomes of the Big Local programme. It looks at whether long-term, resident-led funding influences health, wellbeing and community life. It was carried out to understand the wider impact of community-led investment. The report uses specific methods including:

  • data analysis

  • surveys

  • interviews

  • cost-benefit analysis

It aims to inform:

  • funders

  • policymakers

  • local partnerships

Findings

The research found limited measurable change in health outcomes at a population level. However, it identified positive changes in social and community factors linked to health.

The research found that:

  • residents reported stronger community connections

  • people felt more able to influence local decisions

  • some areas saw improvements in social wellbeing

  • long-term funding supported local confidence and skills

Changes in health outcomes may take longer to emerge than the study period allowed.
