Increasing Youth Social Action in Education

Introduction

This research explores how youth social action can be embedded in the education system. It was carried out as part of the #iwill Fund Learning Hub to understand how change happens at a systems level. It’s intended to inform funders, schools, delivery organisations, and policy partners working with children and young people.

Findings

The research found that embedding youth social action in education depends on leadership, incentives, and alignment with school priorities. Activity is more likely to continue where it fits with existing systems.

The research found that:

• strong senior leadership supports long-term delivery

• clear and consistent communication with schools is essential

• external partnerships increase access and quality

• limited time and other barriers reduce opportunities

• youth voice is stronger when social action is part of school culture

The report highlights that change requires action across the wider system. Funding alone is not enough. Policy, accountability measures and school priorities must also support youth social action.
