Introduction

This resource shares what women’s organisations in the South West have learned about supporting women and girls who face difficult situations. It comes from a regional event where projects, funders and commissioners met to build relationships and share learning.

It’s for anyone who wants to understand what helps women and girls get the support they need and why specialist services are important for women and girls.

Findings

The event showed that specialist women’s services are essential in helping women deal with:

  • trauma

  • abuse

  • poverty

  • other disadvantages

Participants explained that women feel safer and more able to rebuild their lives when support is tailored to their needs, trauma‑aware and delivered by people who understand their experiences. The learning also highlighted the importance of strong relationships between services and funders, as well as the need for long‑term, stable funding.

People shared how collaboration, shared learning and co‑production can lead to better services and stronger outcomes for women and girls. Many attendees said the event helped them understand the value and impact of specialist women’s support.
