Introduction

This report summarises the Green Leaders programme, delivered by Groundwork UK as part of the Our Bright Future portfolio. The programme supported young people to develop leadership skills, take environmental action and influence their local communities.

It’s aimed at funders, practitioners and policymakers interested in youth leadership and community‑based environmental action.

Methodology

The summary report draws on data collected across the programme, including:

  • monitoring information

  • participant feedback

  • surveys

  • case studies

evidence from delivery partners across multiple areas

It presents headline figures on environmental impact, youth engagement and community outcomes, alongside qualitative learning about programme delivery models.

Findings

The evaluation found that the Green Leaders programme successfully equipped young people with knowledge, confidence and skills to lead environmental action. Participants increased their understanding of climate change, green jobs and sustainable behaviours.

Projects delivered tangible environmental improvements, such as:

  • tree planting

  • biodiversity work

  • litter‑picking

  • creation of green community spaces

Communities benefited from stronger youth leadership, more positive perceptions of young people and increased interest in environmental activities.

Data highlights increased awareness of green careers, improved confidence applying for jobs, and greater motivation to influence others about sustainability.

The programme demonstrated that youth‑led and environment‑led delivery models can both achieve meaningful outcomes.

Considerations

Findings reflect outcomes from the areas and young people who participated and rely partly on self‑reported feedback. Delivery models varied, meaning results may differ across locations. The report presents learning from a specific programme context rather than a long‑term impact study.
