Introduction

This research evaluates the Get Togethers programme. The programme funded small, informal community events to bring people together through growing, eating and cooking good food. The study aimed to understand how these events supported connection and community life.

It’s intended to inform:

  • funders

  • community organisations

  • local partners

Findings

The research found that small, informal events helped people connect with others in their local area and reduced loneliness. It also found that simple funding and straightforward application processes made it easier for people to take part.

The research found that:

  • events helped people feel more connected to their community

  • many participants met new people they would not usually meet

  • organisers gained confidence and skills

  • small grants enabled local ideas to happen quickly

  • activity often continued beyond the funded event

The programme reached a wide-ranging diverse group of participants, including those who were not already involved in local groups.
