Introduction
This report evaluates From Farm to Fork, a project delivered by Feedback and FoodCycle through the Our Bright Future programme. It aimed to help young people understand food waste, take environmental action and support local communities through gleaning and community cooking.
The report is for funders, practitioners and organisations working on youth engagement and environmental sustainability.
Methodology
The evaluation used:
project monitoring data
activity records
participant feedback
case studies gathered throughout the 3‑year programme
It summarises both quantitative results, such as volumes of food saved and meals provided, and qualitative insights on young people’s learning and experiences.
Findings
The project exceeded expectations, engaging several thousand young people and significantly increasing their awareness of food waste and environmental issues. Participants rescued 293 tonnes of extra produce from farms and helped create 187,899 meals for vulnerable people.
Young people developed:
confidence
teamwork
practical skills
a stronger understanding of social and environmental responsibility
The project also demonstrated the power of hands‑on experiences, such as cleaning and community cooking, in motivating young people to act.
Case studies show wider impacts, including participants going on to lead new initiatives and share learning in their communities.
Considerations
Findings reflect data collected within the 2016 to 2018 delivery period and rely partly on self-reported results. Impacts may vary across locations and participant groups.
The evaluation captures contribution to learning and engagement rather than proving long-term environmental or social impact.
