Introduction

This research evaluates year 3 of the Driving Change project. The project aimed to improve support that young adult carers received in further education, enabling them to achieve better outcomes and fulfil their potential. Funded by The National Lottery Community Fund (TNLCF) and Learning and Work Institute.

The study was carried out to assess:

  • progress

  • learning

  • early impact

It’s intended for funders, delivery partners and policy makers.

Findings

The research found that partnerships made progress in engaging young adult carers who face multiple barriers. Flexible and locally tailored support helped build trust and participation. Young adults reported increased confidence, skills, and aspirations.

The research found that: 

strong partnerships improved local coordination and referrals

colleges improved identification and support of young adult carers

person-centred support improved engagement and retention

colleges progressed against the Quality Standard in Carer Support

external pressures affected delivery in some areas

Colleges improved identification, awareness, recognition, and tailored support for young adult carers, embedding stronger systems despite pandemic challenges.
