Introduction

This report explores how ‘radical kindness’ can strengthen social connections and reduce division, particularly during COVID‑19. It shares learnings from community groups, research partners and organisations working across different UK areas.

It’s intended for policymakers, funders and practitioners interested in cohesion, community engagement and inclusive social action.

Findings

The research found that acts of ‘radical kindness’ helped bridge differences and contributed to stronger community relationships during COVID‑19. Participants described how small, compassionate actions challenged fear and division and created new opportunities for connection across groups. Examples included inter‑area collaboration, cross-sector partnerships and volunteer-led kindness initiatives.

The report also highlighted how the pandemic deepened inequalities, with some communities experiencing greater isolation and vulnerability. However, many groups adapted quickly, finding creative ways to support each other and maintain cohesion. These examples showed the potential for kindness driven approaches to reshape narratives, reduce polarisation and strengthen social bonds.
