Introduction
This research evaluates early-years activity within the Big Local programme. It looks at the progress, challenges and outcomes of the programme in which 150 communites across England received £1 million to lead neighbourhood initiatives. It aims to inform local communities, funders, and policymakers.
Findings
Some of the key findings include:
communities made strong early progress from low starting points. Building shared visions, forming partnerships, and developing confidence in their ability to improve their areas
people experienced positive personal changes. Including increased skills, confidence, and belief that they could contribute to and lead local change.
visible improvements were already emerging in local areas. With new activities, connections, and physical or social changes beginning to take shape
strong relationships and connections were a key driver of progress. With the programme bringing together residents and organisations that had not previously worked together
flexible funding, supportive partners, and light-touch support were critical enablers. Allowing communities to respond to local needs and sustain momentum over time
