Introduction

This report brings together the final learning from the 7‑year Ageing Better programme, which aimed to reduce loneliness and improve social connections for people aged 50+. It summarises what the programme achieved, how it worked and what changed for people, organisations and local systems. The report is for funders, policymakers and practitioners working on ageing and community wellbeing.

Findings

The report found that Ageing Better helped many older people feel more connected and improve their wellbeing. Participants became less lonely during their period of involvement, but the evaluation could not say taking part in Ageing Better directly reduced loneliness. The programme successfully reached people who were socially isolated, living alone or facing inequalities. Activities built confidence, relationships and a stronger sense of belonging.

Organisations involved reported better partnership working, improved understanding of older people’s needs and greater capacity to deliver inclusive services. The programme also contributed to system‑level change, such as influencing local strategies, strengthening voluntary‑sector networks and promoting age‑friendly approaches.

The learning highlights the importance of co‑production, flexible engagement and community‑led models in supporting people aged 50+.
