Introduction

This report presents evaluation evidence and insights from Ageing Better partnerships and stakeholders. It explores the transport related barriers affecting people over 50 leaving home and travelling in and beyond their communities.

The report sets out how these barriers have been overcome through actions to promote inclusive and active travel. It explores the benefits of these approaches in supporting social connections, physical and mental health, and wellbeing.

Findings

The report found that many older people face barriers to travelling, including:

  • poor public transport links

  • reduced confidence

  • health issues

  • limited access to safe walking or cycling routes

Ageing Better projects provided support such as:

  • travel training

  • accompanied journeys

  • social walking

  • cycling groups

  • community transport schemes

These approaches helped people feel safer, more confident and more willing to leave home. Travel‑related activities also reduced loneliness by helping people meet others, access community services and stay active.

The report highlights that involving older people in designing services led to more inclusive, practical solutions.

Overall, transport support contributed to better wellbeing and greater independence.
