Introduction
This report presents the impact evaluation of the National Lottery Community Fund’s Ageing Better programme, which aimed to reduce loneliness and social isolation among people aged 50 and over. It explains what difference the programme made, what worked best and who benefited.
It’s written for funders, policymakers, practitioners and organisations supporting older people.
Findings
The evaluation found that Ageing Better reached large numbers of people aged 50+ experiencing or at risk of loneliness, many of whom faced additional challenges such as poor health or financial pressures.
The programme delivered a wide range of activities, from social groups to one‑to‑one support.
Data showed improvements in wellbeing, social connections and reductions in loneliness for many participants, especially those who attended more regularly.
Ageing Better’s success was dues to the diversity of activities, services and approaches adopted. Key factors which enabled positive change included creating opportunities for regular participation in activity that was meaningful or enjoyable for them; work to link individuals to other activity; a commitment to ensuring projects were welcoming and the offer of holistic support.
The evaluation also highlighted the value of involving older people in designing and shaping services.
Overall, Ageing Better made a positive difference to many people’s lives.
