Introduction
This rapid review explores how the Ageing Better programme patners responded to the COVID-19 pandemic. It looks at how partnerships adapted their work to support people aged 50 and over who were at risk of loneliness and isolation.
It’s intended for:
funders
delivery partners
community organisations
Findings
The report found that partnerships adapted quickly to support people over 50 during the pandemic. When face-to-face activities stopped, organisations moved support online, by phone and through community networks.
Telephone befriending, digital inclusion support and local helplines helped people stay connected and access practical and emotional support.
The report highlights the importance of trusted local relationships, neighbourliness and community action in reducing loneliness. It also found that some people needed extra help to use digital services and stay connected. The report suggests long-term recovery should:
strengthen social connections
build on community support
increase digital inclusion
encourage local people to help each other more often
