In recent years there has been some progress in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Uganda. However, whilst the rate of new infections has declined in urban areas, in rural areas the rate of new infections is increasing. Women aged 20-24 years show the highest rates of infection. Illiteracy, cultural practices and lack of access to health services are some of the causes. Overall, it is estimated that 7 per cent of Ugandans are HIV positive.
