This project aims to better understand the childcare choices being made by parents. Despite investment in formal childcare, the number of parents using informal childcare (from friends and relatives) remains high and it is now on the political agenda. This study will analyse the reasons for using informal care, the extent and type of use, who provides it, and how far it is mediated by class, locality, parental status and social disadvantage.
